There are currently School Resource Deputies assigned to all high schools as well as middle schools located in Leon County. The School Resource Officer Unit is supervised by two sergeants, a lieutenant and a captain. These officers teach youth oriented prevention programs such as D.A.R.E., (Drug Abuse Resistance and Education) and G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training.)

More information on the "G.R.E.A.T." and "D.A.R.E." programs can be obtained by clicking the images below.

In addition to prevention programs, deputies also teach the basic understanding of the Criminal Justice System and the role of a law enforcement officer and their duties. They also take law enforcement action as required within their assigned school.

Some of the other programs School Resource Deputies are involved in are:

Sheriff's Adventure Camp - This program exposes youth to leadership skills as well as substance abuse education.

Sheriff's Youth Camps - These camps provide help for Florida's neglected, unsupervised and troubled boys and girls.

Sheriff's Explorer Post - This program serves youth from 15-21, through the Boy Scouts of America.

START (Students Taking Action and Responsibility Together) - The main focus of this program is an anti-violence theme for middle school students.

PRIDE - This is a high school drug education program, aimed not only at teaching students the harmful effects of drugs, but the importance of believing in themselves. This program is funded in cooperation with Drug Free Schools.

SHOCAP (Serious Habitual Offender Comprehensive Action Program) - This is an interagency effort to address serious habitual juvenile offenders in Tallahassee. School Resource Deputies provide a unique insight to juveniles daily behavior through contacts at school.

Youth Crime Watch of America - This program promotes the exchange of ideas and information to prevent drug, alcohol abuse, youth gangs, violence, thefts and other crimes on campus and teenage student dropouts.

School Safety Hotline - The Leon County Sheriff's Office working in conjunction with the Florida Sheriff's Association operates a school safety hotline. The hotline promotes the early reporting criminal activity, allowing individuals to call anonymously on a toll free phone line. The toll-free number is 1-877-723-2728.

A Child is Missing - Nationwide more that 3,000 children, elderly, and disabled persons are reported missing everyday. Law Enforcement is constantly seeking alternative ways for citizens to support law enforcement in it's efforts to locate and safely retrieve missing children and the elderly.
