Sheriff Larry Campbell has dedicated the better part of his life to improving the quality of life and insuring the public safety of Floridians. It would be impossible to describe all his accomplishments in this forum. He has accomplished a great number of proactive community service projects in just the past two years. Since he was sworn in as Sheriff in 1996, he has focused a great deal of his attention and energy on crime prevention and community oriented programs designed to benefit all areas of Tallahassee and Leon County.

  Since taking office Sheriff Campbell has encouraged LCSO members to adopt a team approach to community involvement. His goals are: for deputies to participate in multiple community projects, events and functions of their choice; to show that law enforcement is contributing to Leon County's quality of life as well as it's public safety; and to have deputies visible during community events.

  Youth programs are a high priority with Sheriff Campbell. He participates in or supports a multitude of crime prevention programs aimed at our younger residents, from sponsoring local youth athletic leagues, to the various programs offered by the School Resource Officer and Crime Prevention Units. He encourages deputies in these units to sponsor or instruct such programs as Youth Crime Watch, the Explorer Scout program, the Sheriff's Adventure Camp, G.R.E.A.T., D.A.R.E., the Child Lures program, the McGruff puppet program, the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranches and many more programs.

  FUND RAISING EVENTS

  Sheriff Campbell leads by example. He is on the go from early morning until late at night, often seven days a week. His enthusiasm and interest in our community is demonstrated daily and continues to inspire fellow members of the Sheriff's Office to follow his course.

  United Way Campaign - One recent example was the 2003 United Way Campaign in which the employees raised over $50,000. Sheriff Campbell was the co-chair for the local United Way. This is a direct reflection of Sheriff Campbell's commitment to community involvement through the Leon County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Campbell was the 2002 United Way Campaign Chair-person, which comes after being a United Way Cabinet member since 1997.

  Cops & Lobsters - Sheriff Campbell and members of the Leon County Sheriff s Office are committed to community service. During our annual "Cops & Lobsters" event at Red Lobster, Sheriff Campbell stands for hours at the front door as a celebrity greeter. Inside, 10-15 deputies volunteer as celebrity waiters to collect tips and raise money to benefit the mentally retarded athletes of Special Olympics Florida. During our 2003 campaign, this one night event raised over $4,000.00.

  Special Olympics / Law Enforcement Torch Run - For almost twenty years, the Leon County Sheriff's Office has been an active participant in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Florida. LCSO, under Sheriff Campbell has become the host agency for the capital city run which stages an emotional ceremony at the state Capitol during the torch run. State and local leaders attend along with hundreds of Special Olympic athletes and citizen's as area law enforcement officers bring in the "Flame of Hope".

  All the money collected from the Torch Run and the Red Lobster event goes to benefit the thousands of athletes of Special Olympics Florida including hundreds here in the Leon County / Big Bend area.

  Cops For Kids - It didn't take much encouragement for the LCSO employees to get involved. Cops for Kids is an example of the team work the Sheriff s Office displays. This year, over 100 bicycles were donated to Cops for Kids by Sheriffs Office employees during the annual Marie Livingston's Steak House Cops for Kids event. During the two-night event, celebrity law enforcement waiters raised over $6,000.00. Local law enforcement also sponsored a golf tournament to raise more money for this cause. The Cops for Kids program for Christmas 2003 provided bicycles to over 750 underprivileged children in the Big Bend area.

  American Heart Association - Another example of getting involved, Sheriff Campbell was the Chairman of the American Heart Association 2001 Campaign where a goal of $100,000 was set. With help from his employees and the community the annual Heart Walk was a tremendous success and more than $180,000 was raised. This money will be used to support research for heart disease and stroke.
