The Leon County Sheriff's Office Air Support Unit currently has one Bell Jet Ranger and 2 Bell OH58 series helicopters. It is staffed by three pilots, all of which hold FAA Commercial Helicopter ratings, and a Director of Maintenance with an FAA Airframe and Powerplant certificate.
The unit is particularly proud of the fact that they have saved the tax payers an inordinate amount of money by utilizing surplus aircraft, parts and other equipment.
The unit is equipped with a 30 million candle power searchlight, stabilized binoculars, GPS (Global Positioning System), and FLIR (Forward Looking Infra Red) The recent addition of pilot's Night Vision Goggles and an onboard Mobile Data Computer increases this unit's effectiveness in carrying out its mission of:
